We’ve spent a lot of time talking about periodontal treatment on this blog. But we’d like to get back to the basics: namely, what you can do to avoid needing periodontal treatment in the first place! Healthy gums support healthy, beautiful teeth. There are a few things you can do to make sure both get the care and nutrition that they need to flourish. Just as healthy gums play an important role in a gorgeous smile, your gum health plays a role in your dental health. Take care of the two to enjoy strong, dazzling teeth for many years to come.

The Relationship Between Teeth and Gums

Plaque that has accumulated on your teeth with have similarly negative effects on your gums. While your teeth decay and form cavities, your gums become inflamed and prone to infection. As plaque gathers, your gums and teeth will separate, forming bacteria-filled pockets between the two structures. This allows your teeth to loosen and become unmoored from their sockets. If the periodontal disease is allowed to progress, you may lose these teeth. The infection could also spread through your bloodstream and affect other parts of your body.

You can avoid these drastic problems by engaging in some simple periodontal care.
  • Clean your teeth and gums. This means both brushing and flossing regularly – flossing reaches plaque and bacteria that a toothbrush can’t access.
  • Eat a healthy, nutritious diet. Avoid starchy and overly sugary foods to protect teeth and gums from the acids these foods give rise to. These acids irritate the gums, and prolong inflammation. Foods to embrace (for your gums’ sake especially) include dairy products, raw fruits, green tea, and leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale.
  • Use mouthwash. Antibacterial mouthwash will reach areas of your gums that your toothbrush and floss neglect, rinsing away toxins.
