Laser Dentistry FAQ

Cherrywood Dental • Jan 16, 2014
While the tool in the photo to the right is, in fact, a dental laser, it’s a bit different from what we’re thinking when we mention “laser dentistry.” While dental lasers were once used mainly to cure dental work like bonding or activate whitening gel, they’ve now taken on whole new roles. By using higher-energy lasers, we’re able to cut tissue while keeping patients more comfortable than they would be with their work done by a dental drill. Filled with questions about how this is possible? Read on for a rundown of commonly asked laser dentistry questions.

How does a dental laser work?

Dental lasers focus high-energy light into a narrow beam to affect tissue in some way. It ablates tissue (vaporizes tissue) to remove infection, decay, or dead cells. Different types of lasers have different applications, and can be a part of nearly every dental procedure.

What does a dental laser feel like?

Lasers feel more comfortable than traditional drills and scalpels. They create less friction and help to seal the wounds they make, leading to enhanced patient comfort.

Can lasers work on teeth and gums?

Both soft tissue and hard tissue lasers are available. Cherrywood Dental uses a highly versatile soft tissue laser that’s right for a variety of procedures, ranging from cosmetic gum surgery to periodontal treatment to removal of cold sores.

Will I need anesthesia?

Because laser treatment is more comfortable, anesthesia isn’t always necessary. We’ll talk to you and decide what’s best prior to treatment. If you decide you would like anesthetic after the procedure has begun, we will provide it. We always strive to ensure that our patients don’t feel pain when in the dental chair.

What will my healing time be like after laser work?

Bleeding will be minimal and the treatment site will have a low risk of infection, which typically leads to briefer healing times.
