How Do Dental Lasers Work?

Cherrywood Dental • Sep 24, 2013
Cherrywood Dental Associates’ dental lasers may be new to our practice, but they’re already transforming patient treatment. Before undergoing laser dental work, it’s likely that you’ll have a few questions. If you’ve heard a little about lasers and think they may be too good to be true, we’d like to lay out a few facts about just how dental lasers work to inspire your confidence in this remarkable alternative to the dental drill. Read on for a primer in laser dentistry.

Ask our Greenbelt Dentist | How do dental lasers work?

A laser consists of a certain wavelength of excited light (monochromatic light) that is focused in a narrow beam. Because the wavelength of light used in a laser is specific and monochrome, lasers can be used for a variety of different treatments, to affect different types of tissue ranging from decayed tissue, to healthy hard tissue, to soft tissue, to infected soft tissue (as in the case of periodontal disease). Lasers ablate (vaporize) tissue rather than cutting by means of friction, as a dental drill does.

In which Greenbelt dental procedures can lasers be used?

Lasers may be used in a wide variety of procedures and oral surgeries, including
  • Teeth whitening, as a catalyst
  • Tooth preparation for veneers or crowns
  • Removal of cavities
  • Treatment of periodontal disease
  • Gingival contouring
  • Removal of canker sores
  • Frenectomies
…and that’s not even the end of the list.

What is the experience of laser dental treatment in Greenbelt like?

Lasers improve the dental experience by offering dentistry without many of the negative aspects of the drill. Laser dental treatment is quiet – the laser will not whine or make any high-pitched sounds, merely a quiet clicking sound. Because of the way lasers ablate tissue, there will be minimal bleeding and low change of infection. Lasers kill bacteria to keep surgical sites clean. Your downtime will be minimal and you’ll likely need less anesthesia during treatment.

We find the laser experience to be superior, and we suspect you might, too. Schedule your next procedure with Cherrywood Dental to experience laser treatment for yourself.
