Laser Dentistry Aids Gum Surgery | Greenbelt Dentist

Cherrywood Dental • Aug 01, 2013
Our last blog post discussed the advantages of the VELscope Vx for oral cancer screening. There’s other exciting technology that we’ve welcomed to our practice and are eager to share with our patients. We now offer soft tissue laser dentistry to improve patient comfort during certain procedures. If you’re not familiar with the many advantages of laser dental treatment, read on to learn about the ways dental lasers may affect your dental treatment.

Greenbelt Dentist on the Advantages of Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry bids goodbye to the drill and changes your treatment for the better. In addition to allowing treatment without the scary whine of a drill, dental lasers are also:
  • Sterilizing – Laser beams kill bacteria as they work, making them ideal for periodontal diease treatment. This also reduces the likelihood of infection after treatment, and can lessen the need for antibiotics after some procedures.
  • Tissue-specific – Dental lasers can be set to affect specific types of tissue (e.g. eliminating decayed tooth while leaving healthy tooth untouched). This makes highly precise dentistry a possibility.
  • Decreases pain – Lasers seal nerve ending as they cut tissue, minimizing pain during and after treatment.
  • Speeds recovery time – Because lasers seal nerve endings, cauterize tissue, and eradicate bacteria, the area will heal faster than if the treatment were performed with a dental drill.

Soft Tissue Laser Dental Procedures with our Greenbelt Dentist

Laser dentistry can be a part of the following soft tissue procedures:
  • Gummy smile / crown lengthening surgery – If you feel your smile’s ratio of gums to teeth is off, a soft tissue laser can play a part in gummy smile treatment. Removing gums from the gum line will allow more tooth to show.
  • Frenectomy – Occasionally, a skin attachment can prevent adequate tongue movement. A frenectomy will sever that attachment to allow your tongue to move freely.
  • Periodontal treatment – Dental lasers can easily delve below the gum line to kill bacteria lurking below as a result of gum disease.
  • Remove sores or unwanted tissue – If you have consistent canker sores, or if tissue needs to removed to prepare the area for a crown or veneer, soft tissue lasers will accomplish the job.
