Laser Periodontal Treatment

Laser Periodontal Treatment in Greenbelt, MD

Dr. Barzgar and Dr. Pakpour use the Sol diode laser by Denmat for its wide variety of applications. There is one area in which the soft tissue laser is particularly effective – treatment of periodontal disease. When the gums become infected, bacteria build between the teeth and gums, forming periodontal pockets. These pockets must be reduced and the bacteria present eliminated in order to treat disease and ensure it does not return. Yet the deep pockets can be difficult to access, leading to need for invasive treatment and antibiotics. The unique advantages of dental lasers make them ideally suited for periodontal treatment and reducing bacteria levels in the periodontium.

Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy

Also known as LANAP, the laser-assisted new attachment procedure both removes tissue and bacteria contributing to periodontal disease and stimulates the growth of new tissue in the area, ensuring speedy healing. The soft tissue laser will be used to

  • Sterilize periodontal pockets, killing bacteria present
  • Remove plaque, bacteria, and dead tissue from difficult-to-reach tooth roots and pockets.
  • Reduces the depth of periodontal pockets to repair your periodontal health and smile
  • Stimulate the area so that both bone and tissue growth responds. This also aids in re-attaching the gums to your teeth, to prevent future instances of gum disease and restore your smile.

The soft tissue laser accomplishes the above tasks while working selectively and precisely, to spare healthy tissue. Laser periodontal treatment also results in less post-op pain and a quicker healing period.

Laser Teeth Cleaning

Because lasers have such a profound effect on the state of our patients’ periodontal health, we offer laser tooth decontamination before standard teeth cleanings. Laser decontamination will reduce the number of bacteria present before scaling and planing to prevent bacteria from entering patients’ bloodstreams. This prevents complications that may arise, and also cuts down on cross-contamination between one area of your mouth/body and another. Laser cleaning allows the dental laser to improve your oral health even when periodontal disease is not present, and it may prevent gum disease from becoming a problem in your future.
