Cosmetic Gum Surgery and Your Smile

Cherrywood Dental • Nov 22, 2013
We spend a great deal of time and energy thinking about the ways we should change our teeth in order to perfect our smiles. But the fact remains that our teeth aren’t always the culprit when it comes to a grin’s aesthetic flaws. Our gums play an important role in the look of our smiles, and they can often fail to rise to that occasion. Uneven, overlong, or receding gums lead to a smile that looks unbalanced and just not quite right. Our Woodbridge practice’s soft tissue laser makes cosmetic gum surgery simple and comfortable, leaving you with a smile that you’re excited to show off.

Forms of Cosmetic Gum Surgery

  • Gum grafts – Time, teeth grinding, and periodontal disease can cause your gums to recede, pulling down and away from your teeth. This leaves your tooth roots exposed, making your smile look older and yellower. Exposed tooth roots are also highly sensitive, and can cause you pain when eating or drinking hot/cold foods and liquids. Gum grafts remove small portions of tissue from other places (most commonly the roof of the mouth) to add gums to lacking areas.
  • Gummy smile treatment – Your smile should show an appropriate balance of teeth and gums. But many patients find that their lips draw too far back, revealing more gum than tooth. A gingivectomy will remove tiny bands of tissue from your teeth, evening that balance and perfecting your smile.
  • Gum contouring – Your gum line isn’t always too low or too high. Many patients benefit from a tailored approach to evening and shaping the gum line. Gingival contouring will focus on each tooth that shows when you smile to create a symmetrical smile.

Soft Tissue Dental Lasers

Gum surgery used to be performed solely with scalpels, which can leave you with a long healing period and tender gums. Dental lasers will accomplish the above procedures while improving patient comfort and reducing recovery time.
